The Groom’s Cake

Lately, it seems that more and more couples are serving two cakes at their weddings. Why the second cake? This is what’s known as a groom’s cake.

It may seem like having a groom’s cake is a new trend, but the tradition actually originated in the 17 th century. There are many stories about its history. Some say that the groom’s cake was a rich, darker fruit cake that was served without frosting. Others say that it was a fruit cake enveloped in white icing to match the bride’s cake.

Some historians claim that the groom’s cake eventually became the top layer of the bride’s cake. According to tradition, this top layer was saved and drenched in brandy, so the married couple could enjoy it on their first wedding anniversary. This tradition is still upheld, though there is no longer a need to soak the cake in brandy.

In the South, there is a legend that says that if a single woman brings a piece of groom’s cake home and sleeps with it under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

Although a Southern groom’s cake was typically a dark fruit cake, they are now available in any color, shape or flavor the groom likes.

Groom’s cakes were formerly served entirely separately from the bride’s cake. The groom’s cake was cut and/or wrapped to be eaten after the guests had left the reception. Today, the cake is still sliced and served separately on a different table from the bride’s cake.

Some couples prefer to serve the groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner, since the groom’s family is normally hosting the occasion.

Many couples like to design the groom’s cake to reflect the groom’s hobbies and interests. Many choose to have cakes designed as an antique car or to have a cake that reflects his favorite sporting team.
